Essentially, you’re making adulting cuter, one DIY project or purchase at a time.Lauren Phillips, vice president at Better Homes, joined the 3rd Hour of TODAY on Wednesday to unpack the trend and show how a few changes can make your life, and space, feel brighter.Here’s what to know.What is whimsy-maxxing?Phillips defined whimsy-maxxing as “intentionally adding joy and playfulness to everyday life.”Taking inspiration from maximalism and kitsch aesthetics, the trend encourages adding a splash of fun to otherwise practical items, or to collecting decorative items just because.Phillips highlighted the focus on nostalgia-driven designs, too.How to ‘whimsy-maxx’ your lifeRather than completely rethink your space, Phillips said to start small. She cited statement pieces as quick and easy mood-changers.During her TODAY appearance, Phillips displayed an array of items perfect for whimsy-maxxing, including:Bright ceramic pieces emulating different foods and random items, like a classic strawberry jam container or a floral cowboy bootGiddy The Goose, a ‘90s Midwestern porch decor characterA retro landline phoneBeyond the silliness of it all, Phillips said these items can be practical, too. You can switch out regular glassware for something a little more fun, like colored cups from the Museum of Modern Art.“Whimsy-maxing can be practical,” Phillips explained. “It’s all about taking basic essentials and upgrading them with color and fun silhouettes. Every time you take a little sip of water, you have a smile.”You Can Do Whimsical DIY Projects, TooWhimsy-maxxing embraces trying new things, but it doesn’t have to hurt your wallet. Instead, you can customize items you already own.For example, Al showcased a TODAY producer’s phone, shining with a pink metallic “Hello Kitty” character over a silver glittery backdrop.You can customize everyday items like bags, too, through homemade or purchased bag charms.Customizable whimsy can also be tasty! With a simple mold, dollops of butter on pancakes and ice cubes in drinks can be hearts and other shapes rather than the conventional square.“We are just introducing a little everyday romanticism and spontaneity to mealtime,” Phillips said. “You cannot have a frown on your face when you are drinking a coffee with sprinkles.”“We are here for whimsy-maxxing,” Craig said.
