A former governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party in Edo State, Asha Okojie, has called for better welfare for the military, adding that such will boost the fight against insurgency.

She stated this in a statement reacting to the announcement by the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.) that the minimum monthly salary for entry-level soldiers had increased from N49,000 to N100,000.

While welcomed the improvement, she, however, noted that the move should also serve as the beginning—not the conclusion—of a broader national conversation about military welfare.

She said, “The salary increase represents meaningful progress, and the Federal Government deserves recognition for taking this important step. However, it also raises a more fundamental question that deserves thoughtful national reflection. What does genuine military welfare look like in a nation that depends on its Armed Forces to preserve peace and security?
