Japan has acknowledged the need to strengthen its counterintelligence efforts following a media report claiming that Russia has turned the country into a "spy hub" and a key source of components for weapons production.

The Guardian reported this in an article, according to Ukrinform.

An investigation published by The New York Times on Sunday stated that, due to Japan's weak espionage laws, Moscow has been using the country as a key center for gathering intelligence and procuring dual-use technologies needed for its war against Ukraine.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said that, amid the rapidly changing security environment, the country recognizes the need to strengthen its response to the activities of foreign intelligence services, particularly attempts to obtain sensitive information that threatens national security.
