July 15 (Asia Today) -- A $5 billion electric vehicle battery plant jointly owned by South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group and SK On has begun commercial production in Georgia, strengthening the companies' North American supply chain.

Hyundai-SK Battery Manufacturing America recently started production at its factory in Bartow County, northwest of Atlanta, according to battery industry sources and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Initial battery cells produced at the factory are being supplied to Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah, where they are being used in electric vehicle production.

Hyundai Motor Group and SK On established the joint venture in 2023. Each company owns a 50% stake.
