A child star from the ’90s has shared the “craziest thing that happened” to her on the set of her hit TV show — and it’s pretty terrifying.Ashley Johnson, who played Chrissy Seaver on the ABC sitcom “Growing Pains,” told the story on her “Weird Kids” podcast about how an audience member attempted to kidnap her while she was walking to set.Ashley Johnson, winner of Outstanding Character Performance for her portrayal of the character Ellie in the video game “The Last of Us,” poses in the press room during the 17th annual D.I.C.E awards in 2014.Gabe Ginsberg via Getty Images“This is going to get a little dark,” Johnson told her co-host, fellow former child star Taliesin Jaffe, prefacing the story.Johnson, now 42, explained the incident happened in 1990, when she was around 6 years old, and at the time, the cast would walk by the studio audience on their way to the set. Jonson recalled the line was typically “within 5 feet” of the cast so the actors could say hello before shooting began.“I’m walking with my mom, and then I just remember some guy hops out of the line and he grabs me and grabs me up and starts booking it,” she told a stunned Jaffe.Johnson attends the Little Green Awards on May 28, 1991, in Woodland Hills, California.Ron Galella, Ltd. via Getty Images“All I remember, there was security that somehow got on him after some time,” she said. “So, security comes out, they wrestle him down. I just remember being flying around in the air. “I was clueless as to what was happening. But I was very upset, and they were talking to me about it after. And they were like, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’ and I was like, ‘I just think I’m going to be in trouble.’”When production asked Johnson how she could possibly get in trouble in that scenario, Johnson answered: “He took one of my shoes.”Johnson also mentioned that before the attempted kidnapping happened, somebody had written to the show “and said that ‘I am coming to set and I am going to bring a gun and I am going to murder some of the cast,’” Johnson said.“But yeah, it was crazy. ... I mean, he ended up clearly going to jail. He had a gun,” Johnson said before trying to lighten the mood by utilizing a soundboard in front of her and playing the sound of a studio audience laughing.Johnson also said she was a “polite kid.”“I think he was running with me and running away. I was like, ‘Who are you, sir?’” she joked. “‘What is your name? I was very pleased to meet you.’”“But he was packing,” she recalled. “They got him. This was the thing — he was high on something. It wasn’t meth, but it was some, like, he was so strong. And I remember the guys trying to take him down, and he was just like, he was huge, at least in my childhood.”“They still couldn’t find my shoe!” Johnson remembered. “So, I had to put on some other shoes.”After her child star days, Johnson became a pretty successful voice actor. Notably, she voiced the character of Ellie in the “Last of Us” video games and had a very cool guest-starring role in the first season of the HBO adaptation of the same name — playing Ellie’s mom.“There was a special level of it for me, to play the mother of this character that I care so deeply about,” Johnson told HBO Max in 2023.
