Elisaveta Belobradova of "Democratic Bulgaria" said in front of Parliament today that Bulgarian mothers should not be the subject of symbolic statements and political rhetoric, arguing that their contribution to society and the economy must be recognized. According to official data cited in a declaration by the parliamentary group, Bulgarian mothers generate 47% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).
She stressed that the family is a fundamental pillar of the Bulgarian state, performing three key roles: raising children, generating a substantial share of economic value, and supporting the social system.
"Without the efforts of the family in these three directions, the state becomes an empty concept. And the mother is the most important figure in the Bulgarian family, because she carries the responsibility and vocation to give birth to and raise children," Belobradova said while presenting the declaration.
Democratic Bulgaria argued that policies supporting motherhood must begin with reproductive healthcare and continue throughout the early years of a child's life. The coalition said families need better access to healthcare services, education and employment opportunities, as well as stronger social protection.
