The NFL’s deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign multiyear extensions passed at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. As expected, wide receiver George Pickens did not reach an agreement on a long-term deal with the Dallas Cowboys.Instead, he will play out the 2026 season on the franchise tag before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2027.New York Jets running back Breece Hall, Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts and Pickens were the three players franchise-tagged this offseason, while the Indianapolis Colts placed the transition tag on quarterback Daniel Jones. Two weeks later, the Colts signed Jones to a two-year extension in March. Hall signed his extension in May, while Pitts signed his three-year extension in late June. The Cowboys tagged Pickens after he delivered an All-Pro season in his first year in Dallas, which included 73 receptions, a team-leading 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns. After some ambiguity during the first part of the offseason, the Cowboys were explicit in April that talks of an extension with Pickens would not linger throughout the offseason and into training camp. Those talks had lingered in recent years with wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, quarterback Dak Prescott and linebacker Micah Parsons.
