But for civilians life on the frontline is becoming increasingly unviable – as Russia steps up its relentless bombardment on the towns and cities they’re trying to seize.
More than four years since the full-scale invasion, Russian advances have become slower and even more costly.
Their attacks are focused on the ‘fortress-belt’ – Ukraine’s main defensive line in the east – which connects a string of industrial towns.
