Russia is losing 400 soldiers for every square kilometer they manage to capture in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, according to the head of the Ukrainian armed forces. But for civilians life on the frontline is becoming increasingly unviable – as Russia steps up its relentless bombardment on the towns and cities they’re trying to seize.
More than four years since the full-scale invasion, Russian advances have become slower and even more costly.
Their attacks are focused on the ‘fortress-belt’ – Ukraine’s main defensive line in the east – which connects a string of industrial towns.
