The European Union is planning to continue assisting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in the light of the Russian attacks ahead of the winter, committing to allocate EUR 920 million to this end.
That’s according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who spoke at a press conference during a visit to Kyiv on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
“The Kremlin has tried to freeze your people into submission winter after winter. It failed. It failed because of the extraordinary resilience of the Ukrainian people and because Europe has stood by your side and it will continue,” said the European Commission President.
She recalled that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the EU has invested almost EUR 4 billion in Ukraine’s energy support. She added that this year the EU will provide EUR 920 million for these topics.
“That will keep Ukraine’s energy system running in harsh times and as we prepare for the next winter, our support continues. We are, as we did last winter, are helping to rebuild, repair, and strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure according to our well-oiled plan. Whatever happens this winter, we will do our utmost to keep the light and the heat on in Ukrainian homes,” she said, adding that Ukraine can count on the European Union.
