Germany’s chancellor will do ‘everything’ in his power to stop the AfD entering government
German history rules out any role for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in a future governing coalition, Friedrich Merz, the country’s chancellor said on Wednesday.
Asked about the participation of far-right or radical nationalist parties in governments such as in the Netherlands, Merz said that Germany’s Nazi past and the Holocaust rendered any comparisons or lessons meaningless.
“If a radical right-wing party were to come into government in Germany, it would have a completely different meaning than if that were to happen in another EU country,” he said, speaking at his annual summer press conference.
“I will do everything in my power to prevent it.”
