The Centre has launched a comprehensive "Seafarer-First" initiative to protect Indian sailors operating in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman amid escalating maritime tensions in West Asia. The move comes after Indian seafarer Rohan Kumar was killed in a missile attack on two Emirati oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the government will now track every Indian seafarer through a real-time vessel-by-vessel dashboard, regardless of the ship's flag, to ensure their safety, welfare and swift response during emergencies.
