Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said Wednesday that he and Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs have agreed to hold joint military exercises at Latvia’s Selonia military training ground as the Baltic neighbours seek to deepen defence cooperation.
“I see great potential in strengthening cooperation between our armed forces, organising joint exercises and increasing our readiness to act together,” Nausėda told reporters after meeting Rinkēvičs in Vilnius. “President Rinkēvičs and I have agreed to hold joint drills at the Selonia training ground in Latvia.”
Rinkēvičs said Latvia was ready to make the training area available not only for exercises but also for broader military cooperation between the two countries.
The leaders also discussed regional security, including Lithuania’s plans to remove a constitutional provision banning the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory.
Last week, Lithuania’s parliament took the first step toward amending Article 137 of the Constitution, which prohibits weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases from being stationed in the country.
