The family of Craig Foreman, a British citizen imprisoned in Iran, announced that the Islamic Republic had added two more years to his sentence. According to them, the ruling was issued solely because of his conversations with foreign media outlets.
As reported by the BBC World Service, Foreman’s family announced on Wednesday, July 15, that he had been sentenced to an additional two years in prison at Evin Prison for conducting interviews with foreign media.
Craig Foreman and his wife, Lindsay Foreman, were arrested in Iran during an overland motorcycle trip from Europe to Australia. Last March, the Revolutionary Court sentenced the couple to 10 years in prison each on charges of espionage, an accusation they have consistently denied. To date, authorities of the Islamic Republic have not publicly released any evidence to substantiate the charge.
The extension of Craig Foreman’s sentence comes as the couple remains on a hunger strike. Previously, the human rights website HRANA reported that they had gone on a hunger strike to protest the rejection of their acquittal requests and the obstacles preventing their release and return to the UK.
According to the couple’s family, the continuation of the hunger strike has raised serious concerns about their physical well-being. Relatives of Craig and Lindsay Foreman have called on the authorities of the Islamic Republic to release them, taking into account the health conditions of the two prisoners.
