The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday unveiled a revamped format for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup, introducing a new Super 10 stage and Eliminators round aimed at expanding opportunities for emerging teams while retaining the tournament as a 20-team competition. The tournament, to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, will begin with five groups of four teams each, replacing the previous format of four groups of five used at the 2026 edition. The top two teams from each group will progress to the newly introduced Super 10 stage, where the 10 qualifiers will be split into two groups of five and play a round-robin league. Also Read: ICC approves new format for Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, introduces three-stage structureUnder the revised structure, the winners of each Super 10 group will qualify directly for the semi-finals. The remaining two semi-final berths will be decided through a new Eliminators round, with the second-placed team from each group facing the third-placed team from the opposite group. The winners of those matches will complete the last four before the tournament concludes with the existing semi-final and final format. The ICC also confirmed the qualification pathway for the tournament. Twelve teams have already secured automatic qualification based on their performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup and ICC rankings. Those teams are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. The remaining eight places will be decided through a 16-team Global Qualifier. Eight teams from the 2026 World Cup that missed direct qualification — Canada, Italy, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, United Arab Emirates and the United States — will advance directly to the Global Qualifier. Scotland, however, has been granted direct entry to the Europe Regional Final due to exceptional circumstances surrounding its participation in the 2026 tournament. The other eight Global Qualifier spots will be filled through regional qualification events, with Africa, Asia and Europe receiving two berths each, while the Americas and East Asia-Pacific regions will have one place apiece. The highest-placed team from each region at the Global Qualifier, along with the next three highest-placed teams overall, will qualify for the 2028 World Cup, subject to minimum performance criteria. The ICC said the revised tournament structure has been endorsed by its Board after recommendations from the Development and Chief Executives' Committees. The final approval, however, will be subject to a review by the ICC's Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee at its November meetings.
