The Puducherry Retired Government College Teachers’ Association has urged the Puducherry Government to expedite the implementation of the Unified Pension Scheme for retired government college teachers in the Union Territory. In a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, Prof. S. Solaimalaichami, president of the association said the teachers who joined service in Government Arts and Science Colleges after 2004 were offered a contributory National Pension Scheme (NPS). When the Central government introduced the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) in 2025 with contributions by both the employee and employer, most of the teachers opted for UPS. However, the pension under UPS was not sanctioned to the teachers even after a year of their retirement, he said. The Association also demanded the government to expedite the implementation of the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS). According to the association, more than 75% of the teachers working in government arts and science colleges are continuing as Assistant Professor even after serving for more than 25 years. Besides, the periodic increase in Grade Pay was also not sanctioned in time. The periodic increase in Grade Pay would have placed most of the teachers with a promotion to Associate Professor cadre. Around 40% of the teachers have already retired from service without a promotion. The teachers demanded a resolution to their long-pending demands. Published - July 15, 2026 04:05 pm IST
