Apple TV has unveiled the first trailer for Mayday, a genre-bending action-comedy that pairs Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh in an unlikely Cold War adventure. The film premieres globally on September 4.Reynolds stars as U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, whose top-secret mission over Soviet territory goes disastrously wrong when his aircraft is shot down. Stranded deep inside enemy territory, Troy expects capture, only to be rescued by Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB operative played by Branagh, whose surprising admiration for American culture turns an impossible situation into an unexpected partnership.Apple describes the film as a buddy comedy that subverts familiar Cold War espionage tropes by placing two ideological opposites on the same mission to survive.Directed and written by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the filmmaking duo behind Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Mayday reunites the pair with another large-scale studio adventure. The supporting cast includes Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński and David Morse. The film also marks Reynolds’ first feature since the record-breaking success of Deadpool & Wolverine, while Branagh continues a busy year following roles in several high-profile releases.First announced in 2023, Mayday is produced by Apple Studios, Skydance Media and Reynolds’ Maximum Effort banner. The film was shot in Montreal under the working title Blackbird before entering post-production. Published - July 15, 2026 02:33 pm IST
