Brandon Aiyuk’s social media posts may have damaged his chances of joining the Washington Commanders as his future with the San Francisco 49ers remains unresolved. (Image via Getty)Brandon Aiyuk has spent weeks pushing for a fresh start with the Washington Commanders. His own social media activity may now be closing that door.ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes Aiyuk has damaged his standing with Washington and other interested teams. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler also said the Commanders are unlikely to pursue the San Francisco 49ers receiver at this stage. Why Brandon Aiyuk’s social media posts may have cooled the Commanders’ interestSchefter addressed Aiyuk’s market on his podcast and pointed directly to the receiver’s repeated posts about the 49ers and Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.“I honestly believe that he has scared off teams like Washington,” Schefter said. “I think they’re looking at the social media posts and saying, ‘Is this the kind of guy that we want to bring in right now and be a part of our franchise?’”Fowler offered a similar update on “SportsCenter.” “There are several veterans they could look at,” Fowler said. “I don’t think it’s going to be Brandon Aiyuk at this stage.”Washington appeared to give Aiyuk his clearest path out of San Francisco. He played with Daniels at Arizona State and has repeatedly signaled that he wants to join the Commanders.Daniels has kept his public comments measured.“I don’t know, I don’t have a sense on it,” Daniels said at a May news conference. “That is my brother and we have a personal relationship. His football future, that’s out of my control.”Aiyuk later tagged Daniels in an Instagram story and criticized him after a video showed the quarterback laughing while a fan cursed at Aiyuk. The post created another problem for a receiver who needs support from Washington, particularly from its franchise quarterback. The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala had already reported that Aiyuk’s online behavior could hurt his chances of reaching his preferred destination. Schefter’s comments suggest that concern has grown.Aiyuk has also criticized the 49ers, general manager John Lynch, former agent Ryan Williams and the NFL Players Association. Teams evaluating him must now consider those public disputes alongside his football value. His posts do not guarantee that his NFL career is over. They do make an already narrow market harder to navigate.Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner went further during his “The Grit Code” podcast. “What I’m going to say is Brandon Aiyuk sealed his fate,” Whitner said. “Brandon Aiyuk will never play another down in the NFL.”Whitner’s statement remains his opinion. Still, it captures the risk Aiyuk has created.Washington once looked like the obvious solution. Aiyuk knew its quarterback, wanted to play there and could have filled the Commanders’ need for another veteran receiver. Now, the team may see more risk than reward.Brandon Aiyuk still has to solve his 49ers standoff before another team can actAiyuk cannot simply choose Washington and sign there. He remains under contract with San Francisco and is still on the reserve/left squad list. The 49ers placed him there in December 2025 after he stopped reporting to the team facility. To move forward, Aiyuk must petition the NFL for reinstatement. Fowler reported in late June that he had not filed the required paperwork.Aiyuk later said publicly that he would not seek reinstatement with San Francisco, even though that step appears necessary before the 49ers can release him and another team can sign him.The contract adds another layer. Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension in 2024, then suffered torn ACL and MCL injuries during Week 7 that season. He finished 2024 with 25 catches for 374 yards in seven games and did not play in 2025.His last full season showed why another team could still consider him. In 2023, Aiyuk caught 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns while helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl. That production remains the strongest argument for giving him another opportunity. The concern is how much of that player remains after the injury and extended absence. The 49ers have already indicated that their relationship with Aiyuk is finished. Lynch said in January that it was “safe to say that he’s played his last snap with the Niners.” Even so, a clean break has not happened.Aiyuk’s route back to the field remains open, but it requires action from him first. Until he completes the reinstatement process, Washington does not have a free agent to evaluate. It has a complicated contract situation and a public campaign that may have damaged his best landing spot. Schefter’s warning is blunt because the stakes are blunt. Aiyuk wanted Washington. Now, he may have talked the Commanders out of wanting him.
