The EU is to propose a “social media start date for minors” that would apply across the bloc, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen has announced, as the Commission faces growing pressure from member states to take coordinated action over youth safety.

After the summer, the Commission will make a proposal for “phased and gradual access for different age ranges”, the German politician said.

She said there was a “consensus” that there should be a minimum age for social media platforms, after presenting the results of an expert panel on child online safety.
