EU governments remain divided ahead of key talks on data-sharing safeguards with the US
National capitals remain at odds over a draft EU-US border security pact, with ambassadors set to decide on Wednesday whether the latest compromise is enough to move negotiations forward.
Ambassadors will be asked to decide whether the revised deal with the US is acceptable after months of negotiations failed to eliminate divisions over data-sharing safeguards, according to an internal Council of the EU note seen by Euractiv.
The EU has been negotiating with Washington for months over how US authorities would be able to access data on Europeans travelling to the US, including sensitive biometric information such as fingerprints and facial scans.
Failure to strike a deal could see countries lose access to the US Visa Waiver Program. Some MEPs, as well as the EU’s data protection watchdog, have called for stronger safeguards.
