Syncing education with industry needs

India today stands at a defining inflection point – the challenge before us is no longer about creating jobs but building an education ecosystem that will prepare us for the future of work itself. As the global economy becomes increasingly competitive, driven by innovation, research and advanced skills, it is the strength of a nation’s industry–academia ecosystem that will define its economic leadership. India can no longer afford a higher education system where universities and industry operate in silos.India is home to one of the world’s largest talent pools, with approximately 7-10 million young Indians entering the workforce every year – one of the greatest opportunities of the 21st century. But demographic scale alone cannot guarantee economic leadership. The real opportunity lies in whether India can transform this vast human capital into a globally competitive talent base.That requires a fundamental shift in how academia and industry engage with each other.For over 25 years, the Bharti Airtel Foundation has remained committed exclusively to education because we have long believed that human potential is India’s greatest national resource. Through engagements with educational institutions, policymakers and industry leaders, one reality has become increasingly evident: India’s higher education system must evolve far more rapidly to remain aligned with industrial and technological realities.Today, many engineering and postgraduate (PG) programmes continue to operate as legacy systems, often disconnected from evolving industry needs and emerging technologies. Industry, meanwhile, continues to invest significant time and resources in retraining even qualified graduates. The challenge is not one of talent, but of alignment. As technological cycles shrink rapidly and future technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Cyber Security and Data Sciences redefine enterprise, India’s institutions must move from preparing students for “jobs in future” to preparing them for the “future of jobs”.Undergraduate education must focus on building strong foundational and interdisciplinary capabilities that prepare students for long-term adaptability across sectors, but with industry linkages. Simultaneously, postgraduate education should become far more specialised and industry aligned.The future demands deeper collaboration through co-created curricula, joint research programmes, research labs, and industry-sponsored postgraduate pathways.Equally important is addressing the faculty gap in instruction on emerging technologies. Greater participation from Professors of Practice and industry researchers, alongside joint faculty appointments with industry, will be essential to building globally competitive programmes.Curriculum reviewAt the same time, universities must become more agile and responsive to emerging industry realities. One of the biggest missed opportunities in India’s higher education ecosystem has been the lack of periodic curriculum review, particularly in disciplines shaped by rapid technological change. Ensuring curriculum revision at least every three years is critical for institutions to stay aligned with evolving industry needs and global developments. We can ill afford further delays in adapting academic frameworks to the pace of technological and industrial change.Interdisciplinary learning and exposure to real-world problem solving must become central to higher education, with industry engaging on cutting-edge research and ensuring transparency in fund utilisation and outcomes. Industry, for its part, must partner with universities as co-creators of knowledge and innovation, not merely as recruiters of talent.This is particularly critical for PG education, where low enrolment reflects limited industry relevance. Universities need to realign these programmes with sectors in demand, freeing up infrastructure and faculty capacity for more relevant postgraduate offerings.We must also recognise that the future of learning also cannot remain confined to rigid, full-time structures. A considerable portion of young Indians enter the workforce early due to economic realities, even as technological disruption makes lifelong learning essential. Flexible, credit-based systems, online and hybrid pathways, and multiple entry-exit options can democratize access to higher education while enabling professionals to learn and upskill throughout their careers. India’s National Education Policy, 2020 introduced important reforms, particularly its flexible entry-exit framework, and these must now be strengthened for wider implementation.Global experiencesGlobally, the most successful innovation ecosystems have emerged from strong industry–academia collaboration. The United States built its semiconductor and digital leadership through sustained partnerships between universities, research institutions, government and private industry. Across Europe and East Asia too, industry-integrated technical and vocational education systems have played a defining role in economic transformation. India must seize this opportunity to create a similar ecosystem at scale.The Government can play a catalytic role by incentivising collaborative research, enabling matching grants for industry-led innovation, and broadening National Research Foundation (NRF) support to private universities undertaking serious research, while creating frameworks for deeper mobility between academia and industry.Beyond strengthening higher education institutions, these reforms are about building a future-ready national ecosystem where education, research, skilling and industry evolve in tandem. Translating our demographic dividend into gains will require an adaptable and globally connected talent dividend.
