Few names fit that description better than Patrik Laine. Once regarded as one of the league's most feared finishers, the former All-Star is still looking for a new team after his time with the Montreal Canadiens ended. Reports have linked several clubs to the 28-year-old, but the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders appear to stand out as destinations where both the player and the franchise could benefit from a calculated gamble.Why are the Lightning and Islanders emerging as serious landing spots for Patrik Laine?Laine's talent has never been the issue. His powerful shot remains one of the NHL's most dangerous weapons, particularly on the power play. He endeared himself to Montreal Canadiens fans early in his 2024-25 season. But healthy and unhealthy scratches piled up, and his too-rich contract made him untradeable.”With a lower salary now expected, Fox identified several teams monitoring the situation.“A massive pay cut is coming. Still, the Islanders, Kings, Lightning, Flames and Wild are all reportedly considering taking him on as a project,” Fox added.How could Patrik Laine fit with Tampa Bay or New York?For Tampa Bay, the attraction is easy to understand. The Lightning have consistently shown they can maximize skilled players in clearly defined roles. A healthy Laine would immediately give them another elite shooting option, especially alongside playmakers such as Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point.Financially, the move also makes sense. Rather than committing major cap space, Tampa Bay could offer a short-term, incentive-based contract worth around $1.5 million to $2 million before bonuses. If Laine stays healthy, the upside could far outweigh the risk.The Islanders face a different challenge but one that Laine could also help solve. New York has searched for consistent scoring support around Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat, and Laine would instantly add another legitimate top-six scoring threat if he returns to form.The question is whether he fits Pete DeBoer's demands.
