US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has pledged to dismantle the International Criminal Court (ICC) and called on other countries to support the Trump administration’s campaign against the institution, CNN reported.
Rubio accused the court of targeting the United States through what he described as the misuse of international law rather than through military means. His comments mark a major escalation in Washington’s long-running dispute with the ICC, which began during President Donald Trump’s first term over investigations into alleged US actions in Afghanistan.
“The ICC is waging a war against our country, not with bullets or missiles, but with the force of so-called international law,” Rubio said.
The Trump administration has already imposed sanctions on ICC officials over investigations involving the United States and Israel, but the current effort represents a broader campaign aimed at weakening the court’s international support.
The State Department said Washington is pressuring countries around the world to reject the ICC’s authority, particularly nations that host US military forces, cooperate with American law enforcement agencies or rely on the US security umbrella.
