Mayoral candidate Brad Bradford says the police were wrong to call Toronto a safe city in the wake of the deadly Latin festival shooting over the weekend and that, if elected in October, he will exert more control over the service than Mayor Olivia Chow has.

“In the hours after a brazen mass shooting at a beloved street festival, we had a police spokesperson come up to the microphone and tell us that the city is ‘extremely safe,’” said Bradford at a press conference Tuesday morning. “More than a dozen people were shot in Toronto this weekend. Three of them are dead ... To come out and characterize it as ‘extremely safe’ is a bit tone deaf in that moment.”
