Apple’s next iPad mini might miss out on ProMotion despite switching to OLED, per leaker yeux1122. Here are the details.
Supply chain leaker yeux1122 (via MacRumors) has added to rumors that Apple will release a new iPad mini later this year, saying the company is expected to use an 8.4-inch hybrid OLED panel with an LTPS back panel, as previously reported.
More importantly, yeux1122 says the display itself will be limited to a fixed 60Hz refresh rate, which, if correct, would mean the iPad mini would miss out on ProMotion, Apple’s technology for dynamically adjusting the refresh rate up to 120Hz.
The current iPad mini uses a 60Hz LCD panel. So while the rumored move to OLED should bring improvements such as higher contrast, users who were hoping for smoother scrolling and animations beyond what 60Hz can offer may be disappointed.
yeux1122 also says mass production for the next iPad mini is already underway on Samsung Display’s A2 Generation 5.5 line.
