Drivers of electric vehicles face paying 3p per mile from April 2028, the Government has confirmed.
The new scheme will also see owners of hybrids hit with a charge at a lower rate of 1.5p.
The arrangements are intended to help fill the gap in the public finances caused by the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles.
Fuel duty for non-electric cars works out at roughly 6p per mile.
But the eVED proposals are still likely to prove controversial, with the Government saying there will be an upfront payment calculated using driver mileage estimates.
