Three MLAs representing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) urged the Madurai Corporation to be pro-active and give a good impression about the new government to the masses through smart work.Madurai East MLA S. Karthikeyan said that the Municipal Administration department was held by none other than Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay showed that the government was keen on keeping the cities clean. Assuring to cooperate in the development of Madurai city, he wanted the officials to be more responsible. He said, “I attended the last meeting and had asked for response in writing from the officials. Till now, there has not been a word. If an elected representative (MLA) is given this treatment, how could the common man expect any tangible results from you (officials).”He levelled serious charges against the Town and Country Planning department officials, who, he said, had functioned in the manner which had brought loss to the civic body in the past and cited a few incidents.“If the Mayor and the officials fail to take action, he threatened to lodge a complaint with the DVAC for a probe,” he added. The officials, he said, had been collecting tax from a textile showroom in Mattuthavani, while the assessors had not even got the plan approval for the building. Likewise, a vegetable market near Paravai too had not obtained the building plan as mandated by the Town and Country Planning department, Mr. Karthikeyan alleged and sought an explanation.Madurai South MLA S.S. Gobison said that the civic authorities should evict the encroachers on the 10-acre land on the Gate Lock Road at the earliest. He also said that Chinnakanmoi, a waterbody, too was encroached. By evicting and reviving the waterbody to its original position, the water table would improve and eco-system could be protected.Madhar Badhurudeen, Madurai Central MLA, said that as the Madurai Central Prisons, which is going to be shifted, the civic authorities could build a college of arts and science, a kalyana mandapam and a state-of-the-art stadium like Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
