M&S has unveiled “sweet sandwiches”, a dessert-style twist inspired by the kind of novelty sweet snacks found in Japanese convenience stores, as it looks to bring a bit of that grab-and-go indulgence to UK shoppers.‌So are they actually any good? Food reviewer and baking guru Eloise Head was determined to find out, so she headed to her local supermarket to pick up the sweet treats. Here's what she thought of them...‌Strawberries and creme sandwichThe M&S website reads: "The nation's favourite viral sandwich is back. Made with the UK's sweetest Collection Red Diamond strawberries, grown exclusively by MandS Select Farmers, this limited‐edition sandwich is a summer must-try."Expect juicy Red Diamond Strawberries, layered with a light whipped cream cheese between soft, sweetened bread. Run, don't walk, to get your hands on this sweet treat while you can".Content cannot be displayed without consent‌Eloise began with the original strawberries and creme sandwich, which appeared on shelves in 2025. She noted that the bread was "very soft," and it tastes "very summery". And naturally, strawberries and cream are quintessentially British, courtesy of Wimbledon.However, she said: "It's actually not as sweet as I thought it was gonna be because the cream cheese bit has a tang to it. I just wish the cream were a little bit sweeter. I wanted it to taste a little bit more like cake, to be honest".She gave it a 7/10 rating.‌Chocolate, strawberries and pistachio creme sandwichThe M&S website reads: "Introducing a brand-new addition to our viral sweet summer sandwich lineup – the UK's first dessert sandwich. Ripe, sweet British strawberries are paired with smooth pistachio creme and a rich Fairtrade Belgian chocolate spread, layered in cocoa‐enriched sweetened bread."This sweet sandwich is sure to get the nation talking – head to the Foodhall now to try it for yourself".‌When Eloise removed it from the packaging, she observed it felt "heavy," but upon taking her first bite, she remarked there was "something weird about it," prompting her to take another mouthful.Eloise confessed that she didn't adore it quite as much as anticipated, noting that "the chocolate spread tastes quite dark," and revealing she's not particularly keen on dark chocolate."Again, it's not quite as sweet as I would've liked it. The pistachio creme part, though, is really good. I'd prefer to taste more pistachio. The more I'm eating it, the more I'm liking it," she said.Article continues belowShe awarded it an 8/10 score, as she favoured it over the original.While Eloise enjoyed both sandwiches, she wishes M&S would have dialled up the sweetness. That extra detail would truly make each feel like a dessert or cake, rather than a traditional meal deal.However, if you don't have a sweet tooth than you may be happy about the lack of sugar. Taste is subjective, after all!
