When solving a jigsaw puzzle, one occasionally stumbles upon a piece that brings the final picture into sharper focus. For Manchester United this summer, that puzzle piece is Youri Tielemans. The 29-year-old is expected to complete a deal worth £35million ($47m), becoming the second midfield signing of the club’s rebuild.Tielemans is at once an insurance policy and lodestar for United’s midfield. He is a player of technical mastery and sublime imagination who will reduce the creative burden on Bruno Fernandes in games. Opposition teams hoping to defend deep and frustrate them will have to contend with Tielemans’ adept passing and excellent shooting from range. His versatility will allow United to vary their speed when looking to progress the ball between the penalty areas. Paired well with the correct player, United’s midfield should sing. The club’s next step is to recruit a suitable defensive midfielder, who is likely to be a regular starter, with one of Tielemans, Mainoo or Andrey Santos filling the other spot. The Belgium international is a fantastic example of two classic adages: “At the highest level, the first two yards are in your head” and “the ball moves faster than any man can”. Few central midfielders in the Premier League today possess his passing vision, intelligence and accuracy over longer distances. And those who do often lack his appreciation for the short, simple plays and his ability to wriggle out of pressure. This is a footballer who has thrived as a playmaker in the style of Fernandes, as a box-to-box operator, and as a midfield orchestrator. Not an outright destroyer but no slouch defensively, he brings quality on both sides of the ball that will please coaches and fans alike. That Tielemans does it despite lacking the explosive burst of pace that has become a trademark of so many midfielders hustling and bustling around the league is commendable. If there are any concerns about his suitability for United, they have less to do with his talent and more to do with his longevity.Tielemans has played an astonishing amount of football over an extended period. The Belgian’s senior debut came for Anderlecht in July 2013, and his four-year spell at the club included games against Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United in the Europa League, where he faced off against Michael Carrick. In November 2017, he was Fabinho’s midfield partner at Monaco. United reportedly had an interest in signing Tielemans in 2019, but he eventually joined Leicester City, going on to score the winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final. He left Leicester following their relegation in 2023, eventually becoming Aston Villa’s midfield metronome.Tielemans is 29, but his 668 appearances across club football and the international game (he has 90 caps for Belgium) make him much older “in football years”. It is a crude metric, but he is not far behind Lionel Messi (701) and Cristiano Ronaldo (720) when it comes to games played for club and country before turning 30. It’s a heavy workload that has taken a toll on his body. Tielemans shares Fernandes’ creativity, but not his immunity to injury. The Belgian missed 21 matches for Villa in 2025-26 due to ankle and calf problems, perhaps a side effect of an especially exhausting 2024-25 season in which he made 53 appearances in all competitions. The Belgian’s game is not particularly reliant on pace, so he might not suffer such a sharp downturn in form as other players who started young and accumulated many miles on the clock. Still, there is a chance he will be a very different player come the end of his five-year contract with United.Right now, Tielemans is an insurance policy for games when Carrick will need finesse beyond what Santos and Mainoo can offer. His presence will reduce the creative pressures on the two midfielders, giving them further time to develop their games.Tielemans may not spend much of 2026-27 playing alongside the pair, but he provides a sensible blueprint and an excellent sounding board for the two younger players.Tielemans’ signing can also be viewed as the guiding piece for what could — and should — remain of United’s midfield rebuild. The club’s intention throughout the summer has been to sign as many as three midfielders. With two already recruited, an athletic, defensively-minded tackler would bring out the best in Santos (who played well next to Moises Caicedo at Chelsea), Mainoo (who paired well with Casemiro and remains part of Carrick’s plans) and Tielemans himself (who performed excellently alongside Boubacar Kamara or Amadou Onana at Villa). The ideal player would not come cheap, but there are suitable individuals in the Premier League, as well as those enjoying success playing in Europe. Tielemans is a good signing for United. He can become an even better one after the club adds someone who can play alongside him and handle the majority of aerial duels in a game. The entire team will recalibrate depending on which defensive midfielder United recruit to go alongside the trio. United’s signing of Tielemans is good work. But there’s still a way to go to create a midfield that Carrick can use to compete on four fronts.Jul 14, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
