OPPOSITION Leader Pennelope Beckles said yesterday the PNM had “nothing to hide” and she vowed to fight against any attempt by the UNC Government to vilify the party.Beckles’ comments follow Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s statement on Sunday that the PNM should produce evidence before the police and the Judiciary — both independent institutions — to prove the “lawful” construction of its Balisier House headquarters in Port of Spain.High Court judge Margaret Mohammed last Friday granted an Order to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) to compel the PNM to explain its funding for the multimillion-dollar construction of Balisier House. The police have been investigating the building of Balisier House and, on Friday, Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro, who appointed acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Ramdath Phillip to lead the investigation, authorised him to make an application in the High Court for a Preliminary Unexplained Wealth Order, in accordance with Section 58(1) of the Civil Asset Recovery and Recovery and Management and Unexplained Wealth Act, 2019.In a statement yesterday, Beckles recalled another statement on the matter, also issued yesterday, by PNM chairman Marvin Gonzales. She said she met with the party’s leadership, and Gonzales was instructed to issue a very clear and detailed statement on last Saturday’s story in the Express.“The legacy of our institution will not be tainted by a Government that appears more interested in desperate political attacks than addressing the real issues facing our nation,” Beckles stated, referring to the PNM as a “great movement that has served this nation with distinction for 70 years”.Beckles said the people of Trinidad and Tobago “must recognise that a Government struggling to answer questions about crime, the economy, unemployment, rising costs, and declining confidence in national leadership has chosen instead to turn its wicked and evil attention towards attacking the headquarters of the People’s National Movement”.She argued that what should be at the forefront is the “absolute failure of the UNC Government to improve the lives of citizens”.Stating that the quality of life has decreased significantly, Beckles called the UNC a “politically homeless, corrupt, and fraudulent party, with alleged human traffickers and individuals on bail within its ranks in addition to reports of police investigations into the actions of UNC MPs”.Balisier represents the ‘soul of the PNM’ Beckles said the UNC will not be allowed to rewrite the history of the nation.“Balisier House is not merely a building; it represents the soul of the PNM and the blood, sweat, and tears of generations of citizens who have contributed to this movement,” Beckles said. The Arima MP said Balisier House represents volunteers, supporters, workers, and patriots who have given their time and resources because they believe in service to country.“Under my watch, the PNM will not sit idly by while others attempt to erase these contributions from the political and physical landscape,” Beckles vowed.Beckles said people must ask why there was such urgency to attack the PNM while communities are demanding urgent action on violent crime, families are struggling with the cost of living, and businesses are fighting through economic uncertainty.Beckles said she will “continue to defend our party, our democracy, and the right of citizens to have a strong Opposition that holds Government accountable”.
