Brian Kelly has 35 years of head coaching experience, and he doesn’t believe his career on the sideline is over. To understand what’s next, he will spend the next year remembering where he’s been. And for Kelly, who was fired by LSU last October halfway through his fourth season in Baton Rouge, that means retracing his steps from Grand Valley State to Notre Dame, the place he bolted from in December 2021 while the Irish were still in contention for the College Football Playoff.“Reconnecting just feels so good, and you don’t get a chance to do that when you’re running 110 miles an hour on the treadmill,” Kelly said this week in an appearance on The Independent podcast. “You’re getting a chance to reconnect with former coaches, players, (that’s) been priority No. 1 for me, actually.”In June, Kelly was reported to be in discussions with CBS Sports about joining its college football coverage, though he said this week nothing was signed yet. For Kelly, spending the 2026 football season as a member of the media would be a means to an end. If he doesn’t keep in touch with the sport this fall in some capacity, Kelly knows college football could move on from him entirely.Kelly has already been to Green Bay this offseason, visiting his former quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur. He’ll be back at Grand Valley State for a golf outing, returning to a place where he won two national titles at the Division II level. And at some point later this year, Kelly intends to visit Notre Dame, returning to the Guglielmino Athletics Complex four and a half years after he walked out.
