The US Department of Defense's High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) plans to move a supercomputer.The HPCMP will shift the TI-19 system from its home at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, to the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) facility in Vicksburg, Mississippi.In a single-source notice, the government said that Hewlett Packard Enterprise would be awarded the relocation contract because "HPE is the manufacturer of the TI-19 AFRL supercomputer system, and only HPE has access to the proprietary physical and logical interconnections required to successfully disassemble and reassemble this supercomputer system."A 2016 presentation on the DoD's broader compute portfolio lists TI-19 as an FY21 system with 47 petaflops of performance. Its exact compute configuration is not shared, but the broader system is based on a Cray EX architecture.Back in 2016, the system was expected to run until 2024, but TI-19 ultimately ran for longer, and is now finding new life at the ERDC.Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is home to a number of classified and unclassified supercomputers, with the latest system unveiled this past month. The $20m Flyer offers 14 petaflops of performance, but on more modern hardware than the TI-19. At the time, the department said that Flyer would join nine other AFRL supercomputers.
