Among the competing innovations is an AI-powered platform that helps municipalities detect water leaks.

Three South African university startups are set to fly the country's flag at the SDG Olympiad Regional Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, this August after securing places in one of Africa's leading student innovation competitions.

Representing the University of Cape Town (UCT), the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the University of Venda (Univen), the teams will compete against student entrepreneurs from across the continent for a coveted spot at the SDG Olympiad Global Finals in Switzerland later this year.

The selected startups are tackling some of the world's most pressing challenges through innovations aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), spanning water conservation, sustainable housing and healthcare.

UCT will be represented by Amanzi X, a Cape Town-based deep technology startup focused on SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
