Researchers isolated 45 strains of the bacterium, with E. americana demonstrating the strongest anti-cancer activity. A single intravenous dose of E. americana achieved a 100 per cent tumour elimination rate in mice, without colonising healthy organs. The bacterium functions through a dual mechanism: directly damaging cancer cells and robustly activating the host's immune system. While current findings are limited to mice, the discovery offers a promising proof of concept for developing new bacterial therapies for various human cancers.
