Over the past four months, the two-time Pro Bowler has had three separate run-ins with Florida police, the most serious of which is an active investigation into battery allegations. Bodycam footage later showed Smith visibly frustrated, repeatedly questioning the officer about why his tag had been run. He was cited for the mismatched plate and for not having his license on him, and the matter was resolved by May.Then in June, things got far more serious. A woman identifying herself as Smith's ex-girlfriend called 911, alleging he had assaulted her outside his home and also damaged her laptop and taken money from her car. No arrest was made, but Davie police confirmed the case has since been assigned to detectives and remains an open investigation. Most recently, on July 6, Smith was pulled over again, this time for driving 70 mph in a 45 mph zone, and once again unable to produce his license. But the battery investigation is a different story altogether, and it's still active with no resolution in sight. For a quarterback stepping into a high-pressure rebuild, off-field distractions like these are the last thing a franchise wants trailing its new starter into the season.
