The Lagos State Government has expanded its Strategic Transport Master Plan from six rail lines to 11 rail lines and one monorail, while also moving to build the technical workforce needed to sustain the enlarged network.
The announcement of the expansion was posted on the agency’s X page on Sunday.
To support the expansion, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority signed an agreement with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation to establish a state-of-the-art railway training centre that will train Nigerians in railway operations, maintenance, signalling, customer service and other technical specialisations.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Managing Director of LAMATA, Abimbola Akinajo, said the training centre was a strategic investment designed to ensure that Lagos develops the indigenous capacity needed to operate and maintain its rapidly expanding rail infrastructure.
She disclosed that the state had already made significant progress in reducing reliance on foreign expertise through the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue and Red Lines.
