Actor Josh Grisetti, best known for his roles on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and the Broadway musicals “Something Rotten!” and “It Shoulda Been You,” died Friday, July 10. He was 44. Grisetti’s cause of death, according to several of his co-stars and confirmed by his agent, was suicide. “It is with a shattered heart that I share that the brilliant Josh Grisetti took his own life on Friday,” Grisetti’s “Something Rotten!” co-star Rob McClure wrote in an emotional Instagram post Sunday. “I’m not ready to even attempt to understand. My heart is with his wife and family as they try to deal with the reality of this.”After noting that he served as the best man at Grisetti’s wedding to wife Mackenzie Grisetti, he added, “Communities around the world will never be the same without him. We love you Josh.”Actor Sierra Boggess, who co-starred with Grisetti in “It Shoulda Been You,” echoed those sentiments. “It is with the deepest grief that I am sharing with you that our beloved friend Josh Grisetti took his own life on Friday morning. Nothing I can say will make this hurt any less,” she wrote on Instagram. “We all loved him so unbelievably much. He created light and thought and humor everywhere he went ... I loved the way he looked at the world and how he challenged ideals and norms. I loved his humor and his brain and deep deep philosophical conversations.” Actor Josh Grisetti, who starred in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and Broadway's "It Shoulda Been You," died July 10 at age 44. News of Grisetti’s death comes just days after he announced he’d stepped away from a production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical” that he’d been slated to direct for Italy’s Trentino Music Festival due to “personal reasons.” In a group photo, the show’s cast held up a cell phone showing Grisetti’s headshot to signify him being a part of the company, which he subsequently shared on Instagram in what turned out to be his final post. “Literally cried on the plane… little gestures go a long way when your heart is hurting...” he wrote. “Love this group of misfits right back!!”A native of Washington, D.C., Grisetti grew up in Rocky Mount, Virginia. The youngest of three children, he attended North Carolina School of the Arts and, later, Boston Conservatory, graduating from the latter in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in musical theater, according to Playbill. In 2008, he made his off-Broadway debut in the musical “Enter Laughing,” winning a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance as well as Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Drama League Award nominations.Grisetti made his Broadway debut in the 2015 musical "It Shoulda Been You." Walter McBride via Getty ImagesGrisetti’s breakout role, however, came in 2015 when he made his Broadway debut in “It Shoulda Been You.” The musical was directed by “Frasier” actor David Hyde Pierce and starred Grisetti alongside Boggess, David Burtka and Tyne Daly. A year later, he joined the cast of Broadway’s “Something Rotten!” in the role of Nigel Bottom, and would go on to reprise the role on the musical’s national tour. In recent years, Grisetti had shifted his focus to arts education and worked as an associate professor of theater and dance at California State University. In 2023, however, he made a high-profile return to acting when he joined the cast of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” in the recurring role of Ralph for the show’s fifth and final season.“To be able to walk that walk and then tell students about that journey and guide them and take away the mystique is important to me,” he told the Orange County Register in 2023 about balancing his acting and higher education careers. “A lot of acting and theater graduates are uninformed or fully lost in how the industry works and don’t do well and get overwhelmed immediately, and I don’t want that to happen to my students.” Of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” he added, “It’s one of the smartest and best-run shows on television. It has a beautiful balance of taking the work very seriously and creating incredible stuff while also remaining playful so it doesn’t feel oppressive.”If you or someone you know needs help, call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for mental health support.
