Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper says he was hoodwinked into filming a personalized video message for a gambling addict. In a statement released Monday in a story on his Instagram account, ahead of All-Star media availability and his Home Run Derby appearance, Harper offered his first comment on his appearance in a 21-second video to a FanDuel customer in November 2024. The video, which was first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer last Thursday, was branded with the betting giant’s logo and showed Harper wishing a fan a happy Thanksgiving. The fan, Terry Thompson, and another plaintiff are suing several sportsbooks, including FanDuel, claiming they use their products and VIP services to intentionally coerce bettors into gambling more. Thompson, who had VIP status with FanDuel, claims in the lawsuit that even as he incurred more than $1.5 million in gambling debt, his FanDuel VIP manager, Bryttanni Morgan, offered perks — like free tickets and hotel accommodations to attend the Super Bowl — and micro-bets to keep him gambling.Harper’s name did not appear in the lawsuit. The video appears to be another perk Morgan procured for Thompson, a Philadelphia sports fan.“What happened here went beyond anything I knew about or approved,” Harper said in the statement.
