Making a good first impression is always helpful and Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola can be pleased with his, as he fielded questions from the media for the first time in the role.Iraola has spent the past week getting his feet under the table, speaking to players and staff and observing the under-21s as they began pre-season, as well as some of the senior squad who returned early from their summer holidays.Preparations will ramp up now, with senior players not involved in the World Cup returning this week for testing before the tour of the United States begins next week.In just over 15 minutes at Liverpool’s Kirkby training base, the 44-year-old former Bournemouth coach came across well. Iraola was asked about a variety of topics and answered them in a calm and thoughtful manner. The Athletic breaks down what we learned from his first press conference.Staying true to his attacking DNA“I would like to give them a team that they can feel proud of.”As the first line of his first press conference, Iraola got this one resoundingly right. He continued by speaking about harnessing the power of Anfield and doing that by having a team that “works hard, (is) intense, aggressive and vertical”.Too often last season, Liverpool were the opposite of that. They were laboured in possession and appeared to be a soft touch out of possession. On the flip side, you would rarely describe Iraola’s Bournemouth side as anything less than intense and aggressive. Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth side were known for their front-foot tactics (Michael Steele/Getty Images)Iraola did not dig into anything in-depth from a tactical sense and admitted that being at Liverpool may require him to “change a little bit, even tactically” but he was appointed because of his front-foot style. He does not want to change the “DNA of what has been my teams” throughout his coaching career.Playing with verticality, attacking with speed and pressing high have been Iraola’s core coaching principles. It will be interesting to see how he might use certain players or adapt their roles so they are more suited to that approach. When discussing tactics, he even brought up the dreaded ‘low block’ phrase used frequently by Slot, much to fans’ annoyance. Bournemouth were not always successful against low blocks under Iraola but he explained this is the tactic he prefers to play against. Having attacking talents such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz will help.“I’m looking forward to spending as much time as we can in the opposition half, with the ball, without the ball, because I feel we are closer to scoring than the opposition if that is the situation,” Iraola said.More signings neededThere is a growing restlessness among the fanbase when it comes to Liverpool’s lack of transfer activity. They have signed two players this summer – Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes and Victor Munoz from Osasuna – but there are holes in the squad that need to be addressed.Iraola could have played down talk of transfers — he is yet to meet most of the squad he has inherited — but he admitted Liverpool “needs more players” to enhance and improve the squad’s quality and depth.
