Sky News and the Reuters news agency reported today, Monday, July 13, that the British government has placed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on its list of terrorist organizations.

According to the Reuters report, this decision criminalizes membership in the IRGC, supporting it, attending meetings related to it, and publicly displaying its symbols within the United Kingdom. The IRGC was already under full British sanctions; however, its blacklisting as a terrorist organization imposes broader legal restrictions on the entity’s members and supporters.

The IRGC was formed after the 1957 Revolution and operates directly under the supervision of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic. In addition to its military and security roles, the institution wields significant influence across broad sectors of Iran’s economy, its missile program, and the regional activities of the Islamic Republic.

The United States placed the IRGC on its Foreign Terrorist Organization list in 2019, and the European Union also designated the entity as a terrorist organization in January.
