With wildfires raging across southern Italy this week as temperatures in parts of Sicily push 45C, here’s how to check the forest fire risk in your area.

Much of Europe remains under high alert for wildfires due to a deadly heatwave, with France and Spain particularly badly affected.

In Sicily, a firefighter died of a suspected heart attack on Wednesday while battling flames in the centre of the island.

Around 100 residents and 22 patients from a clinic in the inland town of Santo Stefano Quisquina – where temperatures have exceeded 40°C in recent days – were evacuated the same day, according to the fire service.

More than 160 fires have also been recorded in the last 24 hours in the neighbouring region of Calabria, AFP reported.
