Meta is planning to more than double its data center campus in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to 5GW of capacity.The campus is set to be Meta's Hyperion data center project, previously a 2GW development.Meta announced plans to build a 4 million sq ft (372,000 sqm) campus known as Hyperion in Richland Parish in late 2024. Originally set on 2,250 acres, Meta quietly purchased an additional 1,400 acres of adjacent land at the end of 2025.Hyperion was initially set to span nine buildings, with each coming online in phases through 2030. DCD has contacted Meta for information about the number of buildings now planned for the campus, and expected timelines.Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously suggested that the project could eventually reach 5GW, with these plans now seemingly cemented.According to the latest announcement, Meta is planning to invest up to $50 billion in the Richland Parish area. The company has also pledged $1 billion to local infrastructure improvements including roads, water and wastewater systems.“This commitment from Meta puts Louisiana at the center of America’s future in artificial intelligence, positioning our nation to compete and lead globally. In just two years, we’ve secured more than $150 billion in new investment by creating an environment where companies can move quickly and build at scale. Projects like this don’t just grow our state’s economy, they ensure America continues to lead in the technologies that will define the next generation,” said Jeff Landry, Governor of LouisianaRachel Peterson, VP of data centers at Meta, added: “From the beginning, this project has always been about more than building infrastructure — it’s about building alongside the community. The people, workforce and partnership we’ve found in Louisiana have enabled this project to be a cornerstone of our global infrastructure. With more than $1.6 billion already contracted with local companies and thousands of jobs being supported, we’re delivering real economic impact alongside the AI infrastructure that will power the future.”According to the company, once operational, the campus will support around 1,000 local jobs.Meta is also partnering with Entergy and will fund seven new natural gas-fueled generating plants, three grid-scale batteries, nuclear uprates, and other purchased power in Louisiana. The company claims this will save local customers around $2 billion over 20 years.Richland Parish is located in the North Louisiana Delta Country. Louisiana as a whole is not a large data center hub.The social media giant has big ambitions for its data center build-out. This January, the company set up Meta Compute to focus on building tens of gigawatts of compute this decade, "and hundreds of gigawatts or more over time," according to CEO Zuckerberg. Earlier this month, the company revealed it was planning a $9.17bn data center campus in Alberta, Canada.Of late, the company has revealed it is planning its own cloud business offering, taking advantage of its large fleet of GPUs and data center capacity.
