Janet Coopey, 70, says she would never have been able to afford her two-bedroom house in France had she retired in the UK.
The former teacher, from Devon, moved to the town of Gouarec in Brittany, north-west France, by herself less than two years ago.
Janet said she wanted to try something different in retirement and push herself out of her comfort zone, adding she has no regrets about moving across the English Channel.

“I’m not a big risk taker, so I opted for something I had some knowledge of, as I had been visiting friends in France for several years. There is also quite a big expat community here and, as a single person, I knew I would need to create a social circle very soon, or I would feel isolated,” Janet said.
