The poster entitled “Ventilation in Detention Facilities: Building the Conceptual and Methodological Foundations for Evidence-Based Improvements” authored by Alex Mendell, Bowen Du, Jean-Marc Zbinden, Pavlos Tamvakis, and Dusan Licina, received the Best Poster Award at the 19th International Conference of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (Indoor Air 2026).The poster presented an ongoing project about indoor environmental quality in detention facilities, with a focus on improving access to fresh air and reducing airborne disease transmission in environments that often experience poor ventilation and overcrowding.This is a collaborative project led by members of HOBEL in partnership with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), funded through the Humanitarian Action Challenge grant program.The poster outlined the data collection and analysis plan. This will involve on-site measurements of indoor air quality parameters and other environmental conditions, as well as surveys conducted with Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) and facility staff. Measurements will be used to characterize the prevailing conditions in these facilities and to enable airflow modelling for identifying context-appropriate solutions for improving ventilation and mitigating the spread of infectious aerosols. Findings will be used to develop resources to support the ICRC’s ongoing work in these facilities and inform broader efforts to improve living conditions in detention facilities, supporting the protection of the health, dignity, and human rights of PDLs.
