A man was left gobsmacked when he got on a plane and found that someone was already sitting in the seat he'd paid for, and was refusing to move for a ridiculous reason11:17, 13 Jul 2026Getting on a plane and finding your seat is a heart-rate-increasing experience for many anyway, but imagine arriving at your seat and seeing someone already sitting in it? That's exactly what happened to one man when he found the seat he'd reserved and paid for was already taken by a random man, and his young daughter was sitting next to him.‌The man explained that he was flying home from Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria. It was a four-and-a-half-hour flight, so he and his girlfriend had booked seats together to maximise comfort. They paid €25 (£21) per seat, so when they boarded the plane, they were a bit confused.‌On Reddit, the anonymous passenger recalled: "This morning, as we boarded the plane, we noticed someone (male, early-ish 40s) sitting in our seats with his (no older than 10) daughter. No big deal, I thought - they must be simply mistaken. I politely mention that they seem to be in the wrong seats. He abruptly jumped down my throat to tell me that he can’t leave his daughter by herself."‌The holidaymaker was "confused" and "taken aback by his defensive attitude," so he looked around for a member of the cabin crew to assist. However, the crew apparently said the 10-year-old girl couldn't travel on her own, and seemingly left it at that, despite the man explaining he'd pre-booked the seats for himself and his girlfriend. He continued: "A young girl, about the same age as myself (early 20s), paces over and begins to explain that by law, minors must be accompanied by their parent/guardian, and that the man had not prepaid seats in advance to the flight. Frustrated but calm, I explained that this was unfair to me and my partner, as we had been prepared, and asked if there was no other way the issue could be resolved.‌"After some back and forth with the stewards, I realised everyone began to take their seats and prepare for take off, while I stood trying to argue my case and getting nowhere. I caved and sat in the aisle next to the father and his daughter, while my girlfriend sat in another seat a few rows behind."Before take off, no attempt was made by the man to address the situation, apologise, thank me for accommodating him, or generally just acknowledge the sacrifice I made."‌During the flight, he grew increasingly angry at the situation, but he tried to push it out of his mind because he was getting too annoyed. But at the end of the flight, he had to say something, so he went with, "Look, I’m not trying to get smart or thick with you, but I just wanted to say that I hope you realise that situation was frustrating for me, as I had paid extra for the seats and I had immediately been told no."However, he soon realised that addressing the issue was a "big mistake," as it "escalated into a one-sided screaming match in a matter of seconds."‌The passenger pointed out that "the daughter in question looked genuinely unbothered and unstressed during this whole ordeal," despite the fact that her dad was claiming she was "crying" at the thought of flying without her dad by her side.In the comments section, people reassured them they'd be equally as peeved if they found someone sitting in their pre-paid seats. In the comments, someone fumed: "I would definitely be contacting the airline and requesting the paid seat money back as well as compensation for the drama".Article continues belowAnother raged: "There are lots of entitled people around, and you are not the a****** for trying to get what you paid for. His poor planning should not impact other paying customers".And a third penned: "I’ve been on a few flights where parents expect everyone else to accommodate them; if you need to sit by your child, book and pay for the seats in advance. I hope you can get the money back, since your girlfriend didn’t even sit in the seat you paid for."
