As far as introductions go, New York Knicks rookie Tyler Nickel has presented himself well to the NBA champions.The 47th pick in last month’s NBA Draft is one of two rookies acquired by New York on draft night playing in the Las Vegas Summer League. And through two games, Nickel so far has been the Knicks’ best player.The 22-year-old shooter from Vanderbilt is averaging 17 points while knocking down 47.6 percent of his 3-pointers. He’s also shown off his motor and sneaky defensive abilities. Nickel has an NBA future if the defense against better competition shows itself, as his shooting, no question, will translate to basketball’s highest level.Call it an overreaction if you want (that’s what summer league is for!), but it does feel like Nickel has a chance to be a real NBA player.“I feel like I’m a mix of different guys with my size, strength and shooting ability,” the 6-foot-6 Nickel said when asked how he envisions himself in the NBA. “I feel really comfortable shooting off the move, so guys like Duncan Robinson, Max Strus, Sam Hauser … and then I also have my own way.”If Nickel can turn into any of those players, the Knicks will have struck second-round gold. Nickel, because of his age and limited athleticism, is likely already the player he’ll be moving forward, but that player as is could contribute on an NBA floor once he is adjusted to the league’s pace and space.
