Ahmed was released earlier this month after serving 14 years of a 19-year sentence for rape and sexual offences against girls, some as young as 12. The current 1971 legislation prevents the removal of a small group of Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK over five decades ago, despite Ahmed being stripped of his British citizenship. Pakistan is reportedly unlikely to accept Ahmed's return, with suggestions they are demanding the extradition of two political dissidents from the UK in exchange. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp suggested that if Pakistan refuses to take Ahmed back, the UK could consider restricting or stopping visa issuance to people from Pakistan.
