The FBI has seized domains belonging to Israeli proxy service NetNut, a subsidiary of Israeli data collection firm Alarum Technologies, as part of an investigation into a botnet allegedly used to route malicious traffic through people’s home internet connections.
The US agency worked with Google and telecoms firm Lumen Technologies to disrupt the botnet, known as Popa, which used malware pre-installed onto millions of Android-based TV streaming boxes sold to consumers.
The Department of Justice said the domain seizures were in connection with a “coordinated law enforcement targeting infrastructure associated with NetNut’s residential proxy platforms, its administrators and its users”.
