Why are Americans richer than Britons?
On the face of it, the facts are straightforward: GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per head is much higher in the US than in the UK. It has been so since the 1890s, bar a short period in the 1930s when the depression in the US was much more severe than that of the UK.
The Second World War saddled Britain with huge debts, and since the financial crash of 2008/9, the gap has widened until GDP per head is now roughly 30 per cent higher in America.
