July 13, 2026 — 2:42pmThe grieving family of a Perth man who died whilst in custody in Bali are demanding answers, saying they hope a “full picture of the circumstances” will become clear following an investigation.Cameron Hughes, 39, was reportedly taken to an immigration detention centre on Friday, accused of breaching his Visa conditions after separating from his Indonesian wife.Cameron Hughes. ABC Hughes had lived in Indonesia for more than 15 years, and shared custody of an eight-year-old son with his former partner.9News Perth reported he was found unconscious and unresponsive in a detention centre bathroom just hours after being detained.On Monday, the family released a statement, saying Hughes was a “devoted father, a loving brother and son, and someone who always put his family first”.“He had a generous heart, a strong work ethic, and determination to overcome any challenges. He was deeply loved, and we hope he will be remembered for his resilience, strength, and unwavering love for his family,” the statement read.“Our family is heartbroken by his passing, and we are still trying to come to terms with such an enormous loss. This has been an incredibly difficult and traumatising time for all of us.”The family said their focus was now on understanding what happened in the lead up to Hughes’ death, including the events and process of that day and the assistance he received.“We are working with Australian consular officials and the relevant authorities to seek answers, and we hope a full picture of the circumstances surrounding his death will become clear,” the family statement continued.“We appreciate the support and respect that has been shown to our family as we grieve this unimaginable loss.”Local authorities in Bali have said they are investigating whether Hughes could have had a heart attack, or self harmed.West Australian Premier Roger Cook was also asked about the investigation during a press conference on Monday morning.“Our understanding is that he was taken into custody on a visa-related matter, and during that custody, he had a medical episode and lost his life,” he said.“I want to thank DFAT and the consular officials who are providing assistance to Mr Hughes’ family.“Our heart goes out to him. This is a really sad situation. We hope that a thorough investigation will take place just to ensure that Mr Hughes didn’t come to any mistreatment while he was in custody.”Cook said the state government had not been in touch with the family personally, and that it was the federal government which would take on the investigation.From our partners
