The remarkable story of legendary South African football coach Clive Barker’s journey with dementia is among the personal accounts being shared with a global audience through the documentary "Hearts Remember", presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) in London this weekend.

The documentary, which receives its European presentation at the conference, marks the first time Barker's experience of living with Lewy body dementia has been recounted on screen.

"The country deserved to know why he wasn't coaching anymore," said Barker's son, John, who recounts his father's final years in the film.

Clive Barker was one of South Africa's most celebrated football coaches, best known for leading Bafana Bafana to their historic 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph on home soil. Barker died on June 10, 2023, aged 78, after living with Lewy body dementia.
